2003, 2013 & 2014 - Best of Show
2019 Award of Distinction - Painting
Born in Fairfield, CA, Matthew's childhood was spent traveling across the United States with his family. The landscapes and weather encountered serve as inspiration in his paintings.
In the following video, Matthew explains his exhibit at the Arcadia Contemporary Art Gallery called Pilgrimage. He explores the question, where is home?
Growing up he lived in so many places that as he got older he lost the sense of where he belonged. This question drove his desire to revisit and paint the houses and neighborhoods that he and his family had lived in over the years. He chose to paint them at dusk and dawn, with street lights glowing and the houses bathed in a sort of half-light giving them an air of mystery. The architecture and landscapes of the small towns he revisited are beautifully captured in his photorealistic painting style.
