Judging
Judging starts in the fall when the three carefully selected judges come to
Winter Park to screen over 1,400 applicants for the festival. Each
artist submits three slides of their work and one slide of their booth for
the judges to review.
From the judges'
screening, between 250 to 270 artists are combined with up to 30 returning
previous year award winners to produce an outstanding group of artists in
the festival.
During Friday of the festival, each of the judges visits each artist to
review their work. In that process, each judge may select certain
pieces representing the artist's body of work for judging. On
Saturday, the judges review all of the pieces selected for judging and award
ten awards of excellence, twenty awards of distinction, the Morse Museum
Award and Best of Show. Additionally, approximately 30 awards of merit
are awarded by the judges. With this multi-level judging platform,
it's easy to see why each artist is a winner by being selected to be in the
festival.
In addition to the $10,000 Purchase Award for Best of Show and the $2,500 Award of Distinguished Work of Art presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, there are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 to be given.
